v      About Silwad

The people of Silwad are known for their pursuit of education and their readiness to sacrifice for their homeland. The battles of Wadi Al-Balat are clearly noted in history.

Historians argued the source of Silwad. Some debated that the name is derived from the words “Lisan” & “Wad” meaning  ‘Tongue of the Valley’ as the town is surrounded by mountains from all sides while the town appears as tongue amidst the mountains. Others mention that Silwad comes from the source “Sal” &“Wad” meaning  ‘a Running Valley’, the words were combined together to give the current name of the town.

As in other towns and cities of Palestine, the Zionist regime have made a significant effort of inseminating settlements as well as confiscating a significant proportion of Silwad’s land. Today Silwad faces one of the biggest settlements in Ramallah (Ofrah Settlement). (See Photo Album).

Despite the circumstances imposed by the Israeli occupation, the people of Silwad have managed to establish a modern municipality, the town have a club for sponsoring cultural and sports activities for the town’s youth.

v    نبذة عن البلدة

عرف أهل سلواد بحبهم للعلم واستعدادهم للتضحية والفداء من أجل الوطن وما زالت معارك واد البلاط المشهورة مسجلة في التاريخ بأحرف بارزة.

اختلف الرواة في سبب تسمية البلدة بهذا الاسم فمنهم من قال أن أصل التسمية هو "لسان الواد" حيث أن الجبال تحيط يسلواد من كل جانب في حين أن البلدة تظهر على شكل لسان بين تلك الجبال. كما قيل بأن اسم سلواد مشتق من كلمتين  - الأولى هي "سال" (أي جرى) والثانية هي "الواد" ثم ادمجتا معا على مر السنين فأصبحت "سلواد". 

وكغيرها من مدن وقرى فلسطين فقد قام الكيان الصهيوني بزرع كيانات استيطانية غريبة – كما قامت اسرائيل بمصادرة الكثير من اراضي البلدة الاستراتيجية. واليوم تجابه سلواد واحدة من أكبر البؤر الاستيطانية في منطقة رام الله (مستوطنة عوفرة) (أنظر ألبوم الصور)

وعلى الرغم من ظروف الاحتلال فقد تمكن اهالي البلدة من تشكيل بلدية متطورة كما أن للبلدة نادي مخصص لرعاية النشاطات الثقافية والرياضية لشباب البلدة.
